Peter Bodenham trained in Ceramics in the mid 1980s at Camberwell School of Art. In the mid 1990s he completed an MA in Fine Art at Cardiff Metropolitan University. Peter lives near Cardigan in west Wales, where he runs St.Dogmaels Pottery. In 2011 he was the Gold Medal winner for Craft and Design at the National Eisteddfod of Wales. Underpinning Peter’s ceramic work is a research based practice exploring his locality, sense of place and the materiality of clay and glaze.
The ceramic wall vessels, shelves and pots were made in response to his local beach environment and the flotsam & jetsam found along the shoreline. His work playfully explores the tension between function, utility and fine art practice. Peter’s creative practice flows between undertaking beach cleans, studying the history, geology, botany, ecology of the coastal environment and then making ceramic utilitarian pots and sculptural vessels in response to his home environment. The use of local clays, motifs, gestural marks brushed or scratched into the surface of the pots can be seen as direct traces of his phenomenological experience of a site and place. The ceramic vessels represent both the beauty and pernicious nature of ocean plastic we find along our shores through the language of abstraction and clay.
