Adult Tapestry Workshops with Jilly Edwards

Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 March 2018 10.30am – 4.30pm £80 a day or book 2 days for £120. Light lunch included

Workshop 1: ‘Let’s start at the beginning’ (Saturday 17 March)
Workshop 2: ‘And now…?’ (Sunday 18 March)

We are pleased to welcome Jilly Edwards the artist behind ‘Joy: Yellow is the New Blue’ exhibition who will be offering 2x one day workshops. Enjoy just one day or a full weekend of textiles.

Workshop 1 will concentrate on teaching you all the basic things you need to know for woven tapestry from learning to warp a frame loom and weave the shapes you use, creating a sampler that you can always refer back to when you get home.

Workshop 2 is a continuation of day one or for students who have already done a basic course. You will discuss different warp thickness and how to warp them onto frames, changes in thickness of yarns and different yarns used to create textures as well as looking at designing from collecting, drawing, cartoon making. You will then have the tools and knowledge to start a tapestry – taking the terror out of designing to create the beginnings of your own masterpiece.

‘Squirrels and Hares’

Adult felt masterclass with Ruth Packham Sunday 8 April 10.30am – 4.30pm £75 includes light lunch

Join us as we welcome artist/maker Ruth Packham who will guide you through the technique of needle felting to make either your very own Brown hare or Red Squirrel using British wool fibre.

Building up layers of wool fibre using a special barbed needle you will be amazed at how your creature comes to life.

Although no previous experience is needed you will need to be able to sit for a long period, have fairly good eyesight, as it can be fiddly and mostly to have patience!

Please state at booking which animal you would prefer to make (either a brown hare or red squirrel) so your materials can be ordered accordingly.

Janet Bolton 2 Day

Textiles Masterclass Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 April 10.30am – 4.30pm £120 includes light lunch

We are pleased to welcome back textile designer Janet Bolton. The main idea of this workshop is to encourage participants to develop their own ideas, with suitable suggestions and help from the very beginning. No need to have a set idea in mind but do come with a simple idea if you would like to.

Working directly with the fabric Janet will explain and demonstrate the simple cutting and sewing techniques required, and describe the excitement of letting the idea change and develop right down to the very last stitch.

Throughout the two days Janet will demonstrate the importance of presenting and framing your work in a way sympathetic to the composition as part of a group appraisal.

Simeon Jones

Bookbinding Masterclass Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 April 10.30am – 4.30pm £120 Includes light lunch

On this intensive two day course participants will make a quarter leather notebook (leather spine and marbled paper boards).

Simeon will take you through the process step by step from making the text block, folding and hand sewing the sections onto tapes to finally pressing your book.

This will be a full weekend of creative endeavour, going home with new skills and a new book.

This is an intermediate level course and requires a reasonable level of hand skills, (having participated in a previous bookbinding course would be an advantage) and as such is not suitable for younger participants. The cost of the course includes a bone folder and paring knife. When booking please specify if you are right or left handed as the knives are specific.
