Please join us for silversmith Yusuke Yamamoto in conversation
 with Andrew Renton and Elizabeth Goring.

Silversmith Yusuke Yamamoto lives and works in the
 remote and beautiful countryside of the Llŷn Peninsula in North Wales. 
designs under my feet alludes to the source of Yusuke’s artistic inspiration:
 his daily observations of the sights, scents, sounds and feel of the natural 
environment around him. His work speaks eloquently of his deep response to 
and connection with nature. Everything he observes and experiences may be 
translated into his lyrical silver objects.

Andrew Renton is former Head of Design Collections at
 Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales. He also manages the 
P&O Makower Trust’s contemporary silver commissioning scheme 
for Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales. 

Dr Elizabeth Goring is an independent curator and writer.
 She was formerly the Curator of Modern Jewellery at 
National Museums Scotland.

A short practical workshop and presentation with silversmith Yusuke Yamamoto and Welsh poet Elinor Gwynn.

Morning session: 10.30am – 12.30pm or
Afternoon session: 1.30pm – 3.30pm

Inspired by the ‘Rosetta’ stone, naming the parts is a glossary project working with young people. Our exhibiting silversmith Yusuke will be working with Welsh language poet Elinor Gwynn on this collaborative workshop. Elinor and Yusuke will start the workshop with a talk and presentation of their respective practices and how this collaboration came about.

Yusuke will then begin the practical workshop by demonstrating the techniques he uses for mark-making with silver. Then, using silversmithing tools, participants will hammer ‘chase’ their chosen words on to thin aluminium sheets. Each participant will take home their own ‘glossary’ of hammered Welsh, English and Japanese words.

At the end of the workshop there will be an opportunity to view Yusuke’s work in Ruthin Craft Centre’s main exhibition room.

“My work tells stories of the country that is now my home, gathered images from observing the sensuality of nature, by drawing and making. With Llwybr Defaid I came across ground markings near my house, made by sheep! Their beautifully irregular yet repetitive patterning led to this beaker. What I create is influenced by my Japanese background and the diversity of my life now in Wales”
