Bethan M. Hughes
Pwytho Llais / Stitching a VoiceBethan Hughes’ Pwytho Llais (Stitching a Voice) is a collection of textile work exploring themes of democracy, politics, identity and community. “Many of the quilts feature the small cross mark we make for many reasons, and I have focussed on its symbolism as the vote and the kiss.”
Look closely. Notice the words and symbols that have been printed so deliberatively, and captured like shadows amongst layers of fabrics and threads. Listen carefully to the chatter of stitches as they scribble furiously across their soft canvases. Hear the hushed clamour rising…
These quilts are talking to us, if we choose to listen.
