Julia Griffiths Jones

6 – 22 October 2014

Project Studios A and B

Julia Griffiths Jones studied Textiles at Winchester School of Art and then continued her textile practice at The Royal College of Art. On leaving the Royal College of Art Julia won a British Council Scholarship to draw and research folk art in Slovakia followed by two more scholarships to Hungary and Romania in 1982 and 1984. Influenced by her Eastern Europe surroundings Julia’s work gradually shifted from textiles to metalwork as she felt compelled to see and feel her drawings lift off the page.

Since Julia’s first research trip to Poland in 1977 her work has always referenced folk culture. Being Welsh, but inspired by folk art from Eastern Europe, has meant that her life and artistic practice has been entwined across many countries. Her cultural traditions are rooted in small communities, as she grew up in Aberaeron, and now lives in Llanybri, Carmarthenshire.
